Restaurant 't Zwaantje

This restaurant is fabulous - really cosy with the squares of carpets used as tablecloths; especially on a cold autumn evening. The staff are really friendly and speak good English, as everyone in Amsterdam does and the menu has some great traditional Dutch dishes. I really recommend the mussels or smoked eel starters followed by the ribs or Dutch stew which is served with mashed potatoes, red cabbage, apple sauce and a huge dish of vegetables but beware, the portions are huge and you will find yourself settled in for the evening as you just won't want to move if you do manage to polish off your plateful! The wine list is excellent and watch out for the vast cat which has obviously enjoyed offerings from guests' plates when they realise that they have over-ordered. The walls are plastered with posters advertising eclectic musical and theatrical events so it's a great place to find out what's going on in the Dam. If you have the inclination (or the room) then roll up the road to Gollum, a cosy brown bar over 2 levels which serves a seemingly limitless selection of draft and bottled beers - and the staff are more than happy for you to have a taster or two before settling on a favourite!
